Assessment Procedures

Assessment in Core Clinical Rotations is multidimensional and competency based. Elements of performance that are important are clinical skills, interpersonal skills, medical knowledge, clinical reasoning skills, qualities of character, integrity, work habits. An overview of Core Clerkship Assessment and procedures used to assign grades for each discipline (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Surgery, OB/Gyn, Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry) is outlined below.

Requirements Prior to Grade Determination

You must successfully complete the following requirements before your clerkship grade will be determined. Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in an incomplete for the rotation and remediation will be necessary.

  1. Documentation of at least one learning experience for each of the “Core Clinical Conditions” listed for the rotation. These conditions are listed on the clerkship cards and are highlighted in CAS dropdown menus. Your learning experiences for the core clinical conditions must be documented in CAS through logs of patient encounters, on-line modules, or didactic sessions. Reminders are sent at regular intervals during the block.
  2. Successful completion of the Friday afternoon IQ+ curriculum including final case presentations.
  3. Completion of the end of rotation survey.
  4. Completion of rotation requirements for Clinical Performance and the NBME Shelf Exam or equivalent exam.

Grading Criteria 2015 - 2016

Students in Core Clerkships will receive a grade of Honors, Commendable, Satisfactory, or Unsatisfactory based on performance on two components:  (1) Clinical Performance and (2) NBME subject examination performance

(1) Clinical Performance

A. Dimensions of clinical performance that are assessed:  Patient Care, Knowledge for Practice, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, Teamwork and Interprofessional Collaboration, Research and Scholarship, and Reflective Practice.   Student performance is observed and assessed by attending physicians, fellows and residents in the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Clinical performance is assessed as “Outstanding”, “Above expectations”, “Meets expectations”, or “Substantial Room for Improvement”.

B. Additional clinical requirements:

Completing and logging the identified core clinical conditions as part of the clerkship is a requirement for completing the clerkship.  Students who have not completed this requirement will receive a grade of “Incomplete” until this requirement is satisfied.

Some clerkships may have additional clinical requirements that must be met to pass the clerkship.  These are described during orientation.

Attendance and participation in the Friday afternoon seminar series is required.

*Cutoffs for “Exceeds Expectations” for NBME Shelf Exam score are based on CWRU historical norms of 50th percentile or higher.  A score in this range is required to receive a final grade of Honors.

A student who fails the shelf exam on the 1st attempt is not eligible for honors. Students who fail the written exam twice in the same discipline OR who fail the written exam in more than one discipline will appear before the Committee on Students.
