Innovations in Digestive Health

This issue of Innovations in Digestive Health showcases some of the latest developments that are taking place at University Hospitals Digestive Health Institute at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Articles highlight the multidisciplinary care provided by the highly trained specialists at the institute’s six Centers of Excellence.

Our lead story focuses on the well-coordinated approach used by physicians at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center. Individuals are able to visit multiple specialists within digestive health to help treat their disease. Sometimes they can see more than one specialist during the same appointment, saving patients time and effort. Our specialists also get support from rheumatologists, dermatologists, nutritionists and other expert providers to give top-quality treatment to patients with IBD.

You’ll also read in these pages about a screening method for colon polyps and colorectal cancer, a technique that is under investigation within our Gastrointestinal Cancer Center. Stool DNA testing is a potential alternative to a colonoscopy for patients. The center is recruiting 1,600 patients for its four-year clinical trial.

Also in this issue, you’ll discover more about the Liver Disease Center, which provides diagnosis and care to patients with often-complicated liver cancers, hepatitis and other liver issues.

Weight-loss surgery is frequently in the news. Our article about the Bariatric Surgery, Metagolic & Nutrition Center explains why bariatric surgery is a growing option for many patients.

This issue also features information about the peroral endoscopic myotomy procedure used by the Advanced Technology & Innovation Center. The technique targets  patients who have dysphagia due to achalasia.

We round out the issue with highlights of the services provided by the Community Gastroenterology &  Quality Center, which includes a number of locations in Northeast Ohio.

Lastly, we are pleased to announce that this year our specialty has again been recognized by U.S.News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals rankings – with UH Case Medical Center ranked in all 12 methodology specialties. The hospital joins a prestigious group ranked of only 13 hospitals in the country ranked in all specialties. UH Case Medical Center also has been recognized as a national model for quality care as the recipient of the 2012American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize. The prestigious award named UH Case Medical Center the top hospital in the nation for its leadership and innovation in quality improvement and safety.

We value collaboration with referring physicians, and welcome the opportunity to work with you and your patients.
