Onconephrology Clinic
Nephrology is a medical specialty that focuses on the kidneys. Kidney disease is a frequent and increasing complication in cancer patients. The number of people living with cancer has been increasing steadily. The aging population, improved cancer diagnostic tools, and decrease in cancer-related mortality have contributed to this increase. Onco-nephrology is a new and evolving subspecialty that focuses on all aspects of kidney-related complications in patients with cancer that may occur because of cancer or its treatment.
Cancer itself can directly cause kidney injury. Kidney injury among these patients can also be due to side effects from cancer treatment. Various types of nephrotoxicity have increased with development of new targeted therapeutic drugs and intensive chemotherapy regimens. Onconephrologists will work with cancer care teams to prevent kidney problems or resolve them as they arise, to improve patient outcomes.
The Onco-Nephrology Clinic at University Hospitals is the first in Cleveland which brings together experts in nephrology and different aspects of oncology including multiple myeloma, and blood and marrow transplant.
The goal of Onconephrology program at University Hospitals of Cleveland is to recognize and treat people with kidney disease related to cancer or its treatment and provides specialized care to address all aspects of kidney disease and kidney issues in cancer patients, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, fluid and electrolytes disorders, and glomerular disease. Renal effects of chemotherapy that can occur during or after the treatment and bone marrow transplant are focus of this clinic.
Onco-nephrology clinic of University Hospitals of Cleveland is located in Sideman Cancer Center and is staffed by Dr. Arash Rashidi, who serves as the director of Onconephrology program at Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.
