Nephrology Fellowship Tracks
Clinical Training track is designed for fellows interested in a clinical practice career. Trainees in the two-year clinician-educator track receive 18 months of clinical training at UH, the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Center and MetroHealth Medical Center, while four months are dedicated to research and scholarship. Clinical experience includes: inpatient general nephrology consultation, acute and chronic hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, hypertension and renal transplantation; outpatient general nephrology, dialysis (in center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and home dialysis), hypertension and renal transplantation.
Research Training track is designed for fellows interested in pursuing academic careers that combine skills in kidney related research and teaching in clinical or basic science. Trainees in the three-year research-scientist track receive one year of clinical training, either at the beginning or at the conclusion of their two-year research training in order to fulfill ABIM Subspecialty Board in Nephrology requirements. Both bench and patient-orientated/translational research training opportunities are available in the laboratories of one or several of the primary training faculty members. Trainees interact with faculty from the departments of Medicine, Pathology, Physiology and Biophysics through seminars and formal course work. The ultimate goal of the research training track is to prepare trainees to assume responsibilities as faculty and successfully compete for extramural funding.
Transplant Nephrology Training Program is a separate one-year fellowship for board-eligible nephrologists interested in pursing careers in kidney transplantation. The program is accredited by the American Society of Transplantation and accommodates up to one trainee per year. Faculty members combine research excellence, clinical commitment and educational enthusiasm while maintaining a congenial and supportive atmosphere to facilitate hands-on training in this program.
