The CRIT Extend (Chief Resident Immersion Training) program was successfully developed and implemented by Gowrishankar Gnanasekaran, MD, (Division of Geriatrics & Palliative Care) on August 15-16, 2015 at Sandusky, OH. This "train the trainers" initiative based on the CRIT course developed by Boston University was led by expert clinical faculty in geriatrics and key program directors in various specialties to improve geriatrics and leadership skills in chief residents and nursing leaders.

The program fostered collaboration among multiple specialties in learning geriatric principles and cultivate leadership skills in different domains of their individual specialties. The program brought together 33 members for this exciting program. This included participants, faculty members, program directors, nursing managers from multiple specialties for an intensive one-and-a-half day workshop. This year’s participating specialties included internal medicine, family medicine, neurology, emergency medicine, preoperative medicine, nursing managers and assistant nursing managers.

Facilitators included key faculty from geriatrics, internal medicine, hospital medicine, and geriatric expert speakers from outside. The program also included a key note speech on immune dysfunction and infections in elderly patient. Sessions on conflict resolution, dealing with a reluctant learner, and giving effective feedback provided assistance in building skills critical to succeed as a chief resident and program leader. Each participant developed a quality improvement project utilizing the knowledge gained through CRIT training.

The CRIT Extend program has provided a powerful and positive impact on participants in an innovative approach in acquiring geriatric skills to improve patient care quality and patient safety. The program aims to cultivate leadership qualities that will be invaluable for trainees in multiple domains beyond the care of older patients and enhance their capabilities as leaders in their own specialties.

Please contact Dr. Gnanasekaran, if you or your program is interested in participating in our next annual CRIT program.
