Robert Bonomo, MD, to Lead Antimicrobial Resistance Initiative

The School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University is collaborating with the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center to lead the initiatives targetted at fighting antibiotic resistant bacteria. The efforts will be led by Dr. Bonomo who has been studying antibiotic resistance since 1990s and is a celebrated expert in the field. Dr. Bonomo will become the director of the new Case VA CARES, which will focus on projects ranging from basic science to drug discovery and new treatment approaches. Over the last decades bacteria and other microorganisms are developing resistance to the antibiotics used to kill them, both imperiling health and adding to health care costs as physicians try different drugs. Research studies show that antibiotic resistance adds approximately $20 billion per year in excess direct health care costs.
